Driver Safety Week

Driver Safety Week is a reminder that even the most well-trained, safety-conscious commercial motor vehicle (CMV) driver is at risk of engaging in driving behaviors that could lead to a crash on today’s crowded highways. During Safe Driver Week the CVSA (Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance) will conduct their annual Operation. Drivers of not only commercial motor vehicles but passenger-vehicles be prepared for possible checkpoints set up along major interstates at state point of entry. Remain alert as these events may be highly visible and attract media attention which may distract passenger car drivers.

Driving Behaviors

Among the driving behaviors law enforcement will be particularly alert to are:

  • speeding,

  • distracted driving,

  • texting while driving,

  • failure to use a seat belt,

  • traveling too closely,

  • improper lane changes and

  • failure to obey traffic control devices.

During last year’s Driver Safety Week, there were nearly 21,000 law enforcement actions, with about half of those CMV drivers. The most frequently issued warnings or citations were for speeding, failure to obey traffic control devices, failure to wear a seat belt while operating a CMV, using a handheld phone and following too closely.
